Extremely Rare 1872 Heaton Mint 25c

    A Magnificent Beauty!

Victoria Specimen 25 Cents 1872-H, Heaton mint, KM5, SP67 PCGS. Obverse 2 type. A coin of outrageous quality and eye-appeal, and easily one of the finest Victorian-era Canadian issues of any denomination, with stunning pale green-blue patina around the obverse edges that deepens to sea-blue, purple and rose color in the centers. On the reverse, the same shades circle the edges while autumn-gold highlights the centers. This wonderful bouquet of color sits atop obviously reflective surfaces,  which impart added brilliance. A tiny tick, in the field just to the left of Victoria's mouth is the only imperfection of note, but it, admittedly, is quite trivial. Issued as a part of the very rare Ralph Heaton and Sons manufactured Specimen sets of 1872, estimates have surmised that perhaps as few as five sets were originally struck. Likely a little on the low side, this estimate is certainly not far off, as the combined population reports at PCGS and NGC reflect six graded examples. Of those, this Superb Gem is the single finest graded. A truly great coin - a wonderful piece of numismatic art at its finest!
