Description

Charles III 8 Reales 1789/8 So-DA AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, KM31, Cal-1225 (CAROLUS III type). Struck posthumously for Charles III before the transition to Charles IV. Widely considered an impossible find in Latin American numismatics as fewer than five extant examples have been confirmed. In fact, Krause reports only three known examples of this highly elusive CAROLUS III overdate. Despite the noted cleaning, this specimen benefits from a dove gray patina and a delicate champagne effervescence along the denticulated rims. The remaining details likely fall in the mid to high AU range and are clearly a cut above those found on the NGC XF45 example that sold in 2020 (Stack's NYINC, January 2020, Lot 20221). It is difficult to call this out as a one-of-a-kind among an entire collection of veritable rarities, but this certainly ranks near the top.
