    Description

Ferdinand VI gold 8 Escudos 1751 So-J MS63 NGC, Santiago mint, KM3, Fr-5, Cal-72. Clearly from the La Luz shipwreck, this broad stunner features full mint luster that sweeps the fields and an expertly-produced strike that renders nearly all details fully bold. Areas of softness are usually noted across the King's attire--however, this selection has managed to escape that pitfall, showing definition that is markedly choice for the type--and darker tone has collected around the design elements on the reverse, shadowing the crowned arms and legends. A small planchet lamination to the left of the King's effigy is likely due to the effects of saltwater, since, although it is not indicated on the holder, this coin came from the Nuestra Señora de la Luz which sunk off the coast of Montevideo, Uruguay in 1752. An altogether engaging specimen, sure to bring much interest from collectors of this fascinating issue.

    Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000.
