MS62 Prooflike 4 Escudos 1749

Ferdinand VI gold "La Luz" 4 Escudos 1749 So-J MS62 Prooflike NGC, Santiago mint, KM2, Cal-740. Salvaged from the "Nuestra Señora de la Luz" (sunk in 1752 off Montevideo, Uruguay). A fantastic 4 Escudos bearing the first date from the first gold coinage of the Santiago Mint. These issues are more commonly located in About Uncirculated grades however this piece holds a desirable near-Choice designation. Its fields are bounding in a high level of flash, undoubtably earning this more superior example its "Prooflike" additive.

In 1752, the Spanish ship"Nuestra Señora de La Luz" was headed to Cádiz from Buenos Aires carrying gold bars and coinage. While anchored, it was blown by a storm onto rocks. claiming most lives abord. Most of the treasure was contemporaneously salvaged, with the power hold only re-discovered in 1992, when several Santiago 8 Escudos in exceptional condition were recovered.
