    Description

Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1817/8 So-FJ MS62 NGC, Santiago mint, KM78, Fr-29. Brilliant Mint State with appealing surface quality and thus very scarce and desirable. A clear 1817/8 overdate and thus undoubtedly struck by the Republicans using colonial dies (they had taken control of the mint as early as 1817), similarly to most of the minor Colonial issues dated 1817. This counterintuitive overdate results from dies dated 1818 finished by the Republicans before they had completed the engraving of the Republican 2-flags type that were eventually dismissed as unacceptable (since they would be proof of the new Independent Republic still issuing Colonial dies in honor of the Spanish king) and thus repunched with the 1817 date. The use of Colonial dies dated 1817 continued until 1823 for the minor gold coins and until 1827 for some minor silver denominations (namely, the 2 Reales). A fascinating memento of the South American War of Independence period in lovely condition.
