    Description

Republic Proof jeton in copper 1876//1878, KM-PnA-24, PF63 BN NGC. Well struck with reflective surfaces and very attractive. Rather than official patterns, these interesting medallic objects are better termed "jetons". This particular piece can be safely assigned to a German origin since many button-like uniface pieces showing the "Chilean" side of it are also known with the legend EINGETR(AGEN): FABRIK-ZEIGEN - meaning registered: fabric mark - with a five-ponted star at the botton on the back (see Leipziger Munzhandlung un Auktion Heidrun Hohn 12/2012, lot 1182 for such a piece). Other pieces from the same origin and showing imitations of coins from other Latin American countries are known as well: a quick search through the ANS holdings yielded examples with Mexican (ref. 1934.22.64) and Ecuadorean (1956.163.1080) designs on the obverse - both correctly classified as buttons. Lastly, K. Prober reported the widespread use of similar pieces with the Brazilian design as knobs of the old full-size petrol lamps. "Presentation" pieces such as the present two-sided example (with the other side imitating a US 10 Dollar piece) were made for advertising purposes of the factory that produced them, which in turn explains their more careful manufacture and scarcity since they are much rarer than the aforementioned uniface pieces. Other similar pieces are the pieces incorrectly listed as Chilean patterns in Krause as PnA2, PnA3, Pn3, PnA4 and Pn8 and commented in our description of the KM PnA2 in this sale. Albeit not a true 10 Pesos pattern, the present piece in nevertheless a very scarce and charming object of the period.
