Description

Extremely Elusive Chilean Peso Pattern

Republic silver Pattern Peso 1819 MS62 NGC, Santiago mint, KM-Pn1. Plain edge. By J.S. Portales. Of the greatest rarity. The Chilean government rejected Portales's design in favor of the "Volcano" Peso already in circulation. Nevertheless, collectors have come to appreciate the beauty of this Pattern, which offers another--admittedly very difficult--iteration of the Volcano design for enthusiasts to chase. NGC has only certified two pieces, with this the sole Mint-State specimen. Based on auction records for the past two decades, there are likely no more than four or five unique pieces still in existence.
