A huge collection of Chinese cash and early coppers with a few later date copper nickel pieces thrown in for good measure. The dates range from ca. 500 BC through 1970 with only a very few late date coin and most of the coins pre-1900. This coin collection was compiled over a 40-year period beginning in the early 1900's. Highlights include: (2) An Yi Er Jin spades, ca. 5th century BC, SCH-1, Jen-16; (2) Chou Dynasty 6 character knives ND (ca 283-265 BC); Bridge money ca. 1000 BC; (4) Chou dynasty small knives; Chou dynasty Pao Liu Huo, 1st square hole copper coin, ca. 544-520 BC, SCH-71, Jin-30; several spades including a Chou dynasty Fu Jian Dan Jin, FD-289, Jin-937; Jin dynasty Emperor Chang Tsung value 10, Sch-1093, Jin-409; Included are many other scarce and rare items. The collector who assembled this archive also made albums for the coins and attached most of the coins to pages with thread. Beneath each coin is the date, and the Emperor and dynasty is also included at the start of each new section with a considerable amount of historical information. Also included are several reference books on Chinese coins and two bound sets of photocopies of the collection pages. Parts of the albums are quite fragile and we must ask that you handle the albums very carefully if you would like to view this lot. One of the pages from the album is photographed to give an idea of the careful detail that was used in forming this amazing group of coins. As many of you know, even 60 years ago there were challenging forgeries of early Chinese coins. Because of this, we highly recommend that you bid only after viewing the collection and we are making it a Must see, sold as is, no return lot.
The consignor writes, "The collection was put together by Dr. Ethel Pierce, a medical missionary who ministered with her Father and Mother in China until 1939 when the Communists came to rule and Christian missionaries were required to leave the country. Many of these coins came from the people she treated in China. Most of these individuals had no way to pay her, but many of them knew of her love for coins, so they gave her these coins as a form of thanks for her treatment. She continued to collect after she moved back to the U.S. in 1939. At that time she moved to Brownwood, Texas with her Mother and continued to practice medicine there. Her brother, Herbert Pierce inherited her collection some time in the 1960's and kept them at his home in Wilburton, Oklahoma. Mr. Pierce had also lived in China with his parents as a young child. After returning to the U.S., he served as a pastor for several churches. He ministered for many years in Wilburton as a missionary working with a local Indian tribe. He sold these coins to my Father, Robin Guess in 1983. My Father had considered Rev. Pierce to be a mentor. My Father was also a minister. They were very close and Rev. Pierce added greatly to my Father's life in many ways." (Total: Several hundred coins) (PCGS# 105010)
