Description

Iconic "Large-Tailed Dragon" Pattern Dollar

Hsüan-t'ung Specimen Pattern "Large-Tailed Dragon" Dollar Year 3 (1911) SP64 PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn309, L&M-33, Kann-226, WS-0043 (this coin), Wenchao-112 (rarity three stars). An altogether elusive Pattern, dubbed the "Large-Tailed Dragon" due to the spread nature of the tail when compared to the production issue. Pattern Dollars from this era find themselves incredibly sought-after, struck in the final years of the Qing dynasty and usually featuring an emblematic, stoic dragon. While we've handled rarities throughout Hsüan-t'ung's short reign, those of this particular type are virtually never seen, where examples might come to market once every decade or two. In fact, this cataloger has only located three examples to see auction in the last thirty years, including the Jacobs and Goodman specimens. Lavishly and carefully struck, every feature rises in clean contrast against the surrounding, glasslike fields, highlighting the paucity of distracting marks and confirming PCGS's near-Gem assertion. Of the six certified by PCGS, the current specimen ranks as the second finest and just a single point from the peak, making for an opportunity not to be missed by only the most quality-conscious Chinese specialist.

SP64 PCGS。
