Spectacular Choice Chang Tso-lin Pattern 1927 Dollar

Republic Chang Tso-lin silver Specimen Pattern Dollar Year 16 (1927) SP63 PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn85, L&M-869, Kann-686 (this coin), WS-0109 (same), Wenchao-899 (rarity 3 stars). An unparalleled opportunity to acquire one of the few Pattern Dollars minted under warlord Chang Tso-lin, which have become some of the the most sought-after and record-breaking items across world numismatics. According to Kann, only four official Dollar designs were minted across the Mukden Tiger's brief hold over Tientsin and Beijing from 1926 to 1928, though none were released to circulation and are only available to collectors in Pattern format today. This design is the second of those listed in Kann, where the dated obverse depicts Chang in full military garb and the reverse features the recognizable dragon & phoenix motif and rosettes in the shape of a floral spray, all designs originating from the Central Mint.

This type has not come to auction in recent memory and is one of only two examples currently known across PCGS and NGC. The Choice designation is well-deserved here, the intricacies of Chang's floriated military dress and the articulation of phoenix feathers and dragon scales fully displayed on either facet. Surface patination is a bit varied, particularly in the upper region of the obverse, yet it contributes to a feeling of material tumult imbued from the coin's history. We are honored to present this offering to what is undoubtedly a group of fiercely pursuant collectors.

One of the most powerful warlords in 1920's China, Chang Tso-lin (Zhang Zuolin) was, as Kann aptly observes, "a selfmade man, who understood [how] to amass great power and still greater fortunes." Only portrayed on a small series of Patterns from the silver Dollar up to a gold 50 Dollar piece produced during his short-lived hold over Beijing and Tientsin from 1926 to 1928, Chang's coins remain some of the rarest and most highly sought after of all Republican issues, numerous examples of which have been known to have set all-time price records when they came to auction.

名家遞藏、流傳有序之民國十六年張作霖像銀樣幣

民國十六年（1927）張作霖戎裝像背龍鳳紀念銀樣幣。SP63 PCGS。
天津造幣廠。据資料顯示，此爲美籍奧地利藏家E. Kann耿愛德舊藏；耿氏《中國幣圖說匯考》編號第686號實物。1971年Hans Schulman之耿氏收藏專題拍賣拍品號877，當時由美國著名藏家Goodman古德曼購藏。1991年Superior Galleries之Goodman古德曼收藏專題拍賣拍品號1062。古德曼在專題拍賣目錄説明此幣乃張作霖樣幣系列中最爲珍罕者。當再次出現在泉界，必將於數十年之後，堪稱彌足珍貴。事實證明如此。此幣於不同時期由世界頂尖的錢幣藏家遞藏至今。

在軍閥張作霖主政期間曾有數款樣幣存世，在今天都一躍成為最受藏家青睞，甚至有力打破世界錢幣拍賣記錄的超凡逸品，可見是次入手機會即使以千載難逢來形容亦所言非虛。人稱「奉天之虎」的張作霖於1926至1928年掌控京津。按耿愛德所言，期間僅鑄造了四款樣幣，當中無一投入流通，故僅有樣幣可供今天的收藏家追逐入手。此為耿愛德記載的第二款設計，正面為張作霖戎裝像，背面則是獨樹一幟的龍鳳圖案，伴以花飾左右相襯，所有設計元素都出自中央造幣廠。

此幣相隔十八年再次呈現於拍賣場，並為PCGS和NGC記錄中的兩例之一。精選品相的分數實至名歸，張作霖的戎裝造型匠心獨運，龍鳳的線條和鱗片都展露無遺。幣面包漿變化無窮，又以正面上方尤甚，華美得體的同時營造出歷年積累的厚重歷史感。敝司有幸向廣大熱切期待的收藏家呈獻此幣，實感光榮萬分。張作霖是1920年代最強盛的中國軍閥之一。耿愛德評價他是一個「白手起家的人，深諳權力和財富之道」。1926至1928年他短暫控制京津，其肖像僅見於當時的一小批樣幣上，從銀幣至伍拾圓金幣不一而足。其樣幣儼然成為民國錢幣的瑰冠，稀罕程度無可匹敵，廣大收藏家無一不再三青睞。當中不乏創造拍賣記錄，至今仍無人超越的驚人例子。
