Enigmatic Off-Metal Pattern Cent in Silver

Republic silver Specimen Pattern Cent Year 25 (1936) SP64 PCGS, KM-Unl., L&M-Unl., Kann-Unl., cf. CL-MG.73 (cupro-nickel Pattern). An extremely rare Republican Pattern strike unlisted across the major references. Stemming from a promulgation on January 10, 1936 to produce minor issues in pure nickel, trials are cited to have been produced for this type in non-precious metals, this being one of a curious handful of extant examples to have been struck in silver. This is the only example graded at PCGS, a stunning near-Gem patinated in a soft storm gray that sits on a bed of reverberating luster, which whips the flan into shape around carefully rendered motifs. The last example to come to auction was an MS62 NGC-graded specimen sold by Stacks in 2014, an item pedigreed both to the Kann and Goodman collections. The latter featured three silver patterns of this type, each with a unique variety and weight, all listed as half dollars "of the highest rarity." The piece at hand seems to belong to the second or third variety, differentiated by their weight (8gm and 6.674gm respectively), but until documentation of its weight is confirmed, it remains to be seen whether this offering stipulates a new unique variety. An enigmatic offering that should command increased scrutiny by advanced collectors of Republican rarities.

極其珍罕的民國樣幣，各大參考書目均未有記載。根據資料，自1936年1月10日起，民國政府曾鑄造一系列鎳質低面值錢幣，而本次拍賣一枚銀幣則為其試鑄樣版，現存者寥寥，精妙神秘。PCGS獨此一例，直逼珍品級別的華美一品。包漿宛如陰霾密佈，銀光閃爍其中，勾劃出精美浮雕，鑄工精妙，瑰麗迷人。對上一枚NGC MS62同款例子曾在2014年拍賣，該枚乃出自耿愛德及古德曼舊藏。古德曼集藏中包括三枚同款銀樣幣，品種及重量各異，均標為最為稀罕的半圓系列。本次拍賣一枚類似第二或第三版別，後兩者分別重8克及6.674克。由於尚未確認本拍品實際重量，現階段未可定斷是否為新款式。隱秘奧妙的一品，相信能引起專注民國珍品的資深藏家關注。
