Among the Finest of an Iconic Type

Republic Yuan Shih-kai Dollar Year 3 (1914) MS66+ PCGS, KM-Y329, L&M-63, Kann-645, WS-0174-1. Regular issue. Reeded edge. While likely the most iconic and instantly recognizable issue of the Chinese series amongst both seasoned numismatists and the layman alike, the 1914 Yuan Shih-kai "Fatman" dollar usually is anything but a remarkable issue--the standard 'base' type for that year seeing nearly 50,000 specimens certified between NGC and PCGS combined. This fact is primarily owed to the enormous numbers originally struck, most of which experienced heavy usage in circulation and few of which were set aside soon after minting. That being said, the current example ranks far and beyond as a clear outlier, with only 11 MS67s represented in the NGC and PCGS census reports, none of which we have been able to locate coming to auction. In August 2018, another MS66+ sold for an astonishing $22,800, breaking the record for the type, and certainly demonstrated the enormous demand for peak-graded pieces. As such, we can only anticipate the fierce bidding the present offering, with its immense whirling luster and nearly undisturbed surfaces, will garner.
