Description
Deeply Patinated "Hat Touches Rim" Dollar
Republic Yuan Shih-kai silver Pattern "Plumed Hat" Dollar Year 3
(1914) MS61 NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Y322, L&M-860, Kann-642.
Hat touching rim variety. A most celebrated issue of the more
ubiquitous "Plumed Hat" Dollar, here in a slightly modified, large
bust format, creating the instantly recognizable "hat touching rim"
variety. While the type is often associated with the "Flying
Dragon" reverse found on the 1916 issues, those with the 1914
reverses are rare at best; this being only the second example the
cataloger was able to locate by surveying auction results from the
last two decades, next to the MS62 Norman Jacobs specimen we
handled in December. Of wonderful quality and embellished by a
champagne aura around Yuan Shih-kai's effigy, this specimen retains
ample originality and is expected to draw significant interest from
the advanced collector of Republican issues.Metal: 91.67% Gold , 3% Silver , 5.33% Copper
Diameter: 39mm
