    Description

Shanghai. Yichangxin of 50 liang (50 Tael), no date or location,  Cribb class VIII-A (var), Horizontally, in an arc, the name of the smelter, Shengyuan; twice, both left and right, the number of the furnace, san ("three"), two circular chops of either a Russian bank or a Russian company, КОКАН....Д. М ; stamp in oriental Turkish gumu[s] ("silver"), 1828.10 grams, 124 X 48 mm, VF. Very rare with the Russian and Turkish stamps.

Considering the location of the Russian chop, just one letter is missing, which is why researchers have proposed КОКАНД for the city of Kokand (also spelled Koqand). Several chops appearing on yuanbo have been traced to Russian commercial establishments in central Asia. This is probably one of those. This smelter appears to have produced bars with and without Shanghai stamped as the location. The stamp in oriental Turkish appears on several other ingots from the smelters Xietaifeng, Cuitai, Qintai and Tongju.
