    Description

Szechuan. Empire brass Specimen Pattern 20 Cents ND (1898) SP63 PCGS, KM-Pn11 (type of KM236 and L&M-349). Well struck, with medium copper-brown patina, underlying luster, and no mentionable flaws. These brass patterns, struck in denominations of 20 Cents, 50 Cents, and 1 Dollar, were supposedly engraved by Charles E. Barber, famed Philadelphia mint engraver, and struck by Ferracute as trials for the Chengtu mint. This piece exhibits the type of strike that one would expect from a Specimen, or trial, strike produced in the U.S. Extremely rare. We sold an NGC certified example of this Pattern (MS64) in our April 2014 auction # 3032. This MS64 example had no better strike, and about the same number of tiny marks, as the present example. It was brighter, with nicer luster. The piece we sold in 2014 brought $26,000 hammer. A rare opportunity to purchase this Mint State Pattern issue.
