    A Beautifully Presented "Lotus" Dollar

Taiwan. Ju-I Military Ration "Lotus" Dollar ND (1853) XF Details (Chopmarked) NGC, Tainan mint, KM-C25-4. L&M-323, Kann-2, Chang Foundation-pg. 50#19. A rare and iconic Asian issue, struck for a two month period in 1853 by the Taiwanese treasury to pay the military during an uprising brought about by Li Shek and Lin Kung in the city of Fung Shan. The front of this type illustrates a floral vase, while the reverse design, from which it's popular name has been derived, displays crossed lotus flowers. At top of the flowers, a maker's chop for "prosperity" appears, while at the bottom, a stacked six and eight character define the weight as 6 mace and 8 candareens. Seldom offered, this coin is among the most visually pleasing that we have seen of the type. While the design is often nearly obliterated by later merchant chops, the surfaces of this example hold relatively few. The underlying details also remain bold, with little evidence of highpoint wear and handling, while present, has blended seamlessly into the fabric of the coin's surfaces. Perhaps equally vital to this example's choice appearance is the alluring tone that has settled over both sides. Predominately a mixture of blue, green and gold hue, the obverse displays a small crescent of color around the edges, while the reverse is entirely painted in these lovely shades. All considered, one of our favorite coins in this entire auction because of its "character", and when combined with its impressive rarity and historic nature, certainly deserving placement in world-class numismatic cabinet!

XF Details (Chopmarked) NGC,
來自:J.C.
