    Visually Superb 3/4-Facing Pattern Dollar

Republic Yuan Shih-kai Pattern Dollar Year 3 (1914) MS63 NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn32, L&M-72, Kann-643, WS-0166, Wenchao-858 (rarity 3 stars). By L. Giorgi. Ranking as an elite rarity within the Republic of China dollar series, the Yuan Shih-kai pattern dollar of 1914 remains an elusive object of desire for the majority of even the most advanced collectors. Appearances on auction are relatively rare, and despite being a pattern, many surviving examples underwent circulation, with the result that locating a well-preserved specimen proves highly challenging. And yet, this choice example carries the prestige of its conditional preservation further still, its visual appeal arguably exceeding its assigned choice certification. The surfaces retain a lustrous, inviting glow, overlaid with a rich yet balanced patina that intermingles metallic and soft lilac tones, yielding an appearance that simultaneously reveals its age while preserving a mint fresh countenance that proves covetable in hand. While minute wisps of handling are observed, even these minor instances remain faint and isolated, resulting in a very clean appearance when carefully rotated and inspected under good light. Connoisseurs of the Chinese Republican series will be intimately familiar with the widely collected side-facing Yuan Shih-kai issues, a ubiquitous type that is only growing in popularity, and one which is arguably an icon of the wider Chinese numismatic series, similar to the Morgan or Peace Dollar in the American series. A pattern thereof, then, with its unique, 3/4-facing bust of the Chinese political leader, must be considered of the highest interest and desirability. A fleeting opportunity to own this exceptional pattern dollar, an immense representative of its issue, sharply struck, bold, and visually compelling.
