Description

(1861-65) Congdon Brothers, Chelsea, MI, F-175A-2a, R.6, MS62 Red and Brown NGC. The Congdon Brothers operated a general store, providing Chelsea with dry goods, crockery, and hardware. Elisha Congdon was born in Connecticut at the end of the 18th century, and relocated to Michigan in the middle 1830s.
The Congdon Brothers were discussed in the 1881 History of Washtenaw County, Michigan: "In the fall of 1850 Elisha Congdon built the first store in Chelsea. ... In the fall of 1850 the town was platted by Elisha and James Congdon. The first named gentleman owned 160 acres of the east side of Main st., and the latter owned 300 acres on the west side of the same thoroughfare."
The present token is the more plentiful Congdon Brothers variety, with a total population estimated between 20 and 75 pieces. This lovely Mint State example retains about 70% of its original red color, with medium brown toning and a few minor stains. However, it is extremely attractive and ranks among the finest examples from this rare town.
Purchased from J. Reynolds (5/14/1949) for 10 cents.
