    Description

(1861-65) Fisher & Hendryx, Tecumseh, MI, F-920A-1b, R.7, AU58 NGC. The 1860 Federal Census for Tecumseh lists Cornelius Hendrix [sic], a 36 year old druggist born in New York, and William Fisher, a 32 year old physician born in England. They resided in the same household, according to that record. In 1863, the Michigan State Gazetteer and Business Directory also gives the name of Cornelius Hendrix, a druggist in Tecumseh.
In the Fall 1976 issue of the Journal of the Civil War Token Society, Paul Cunningham identified Hendryx as Jeremiah S., a business partner of Dr. William Fisher from the late 1850s until 1865. He writes that Fisher was born in England in 1830, immigrated with his family when he was four years old, and settled in Tecumseh in 1840. Fisher earned his medical degree at the University of Michigan and practiced until his death in 1879.
The present near-Mint brass example is sharply struck and nearly free from contact. Toned in subtle apricot, rose, and lilac shades. One gray spot is relegated to the obverse margin at 9 o'clock.
Purchased from James Kelly (5/7/1943) for 40 cents.
