    Books and Jewelry

1861 N.T. Waterman, Coldwater, MI, F-185A-1a, R.8, MS65 Brown NGC. Located on the east branch of the Coldwater River in Branch County, the town of the same name was situated about 100 miles southwest of Detroit. The town was described in 1863 as "one of the most beautiful and pleasantly situated towns in the county, being located in the centre of a farming region that is unsurpassed for fertility and productiveness," according to the 1863 Michigan State Gazetteer and Business Directory.
Nathaniel Throop Waterman, a book dealer and jeweler, was born in New York on February 7, 1814, and died at Paris, Michigan, on February 5, 1885. He relocated to Coldwater prior to his August 31, 1847, marriage to Cynthia Knapp. The couple had three children, one that died in infancy. The family remained in Coldwater for more than 20 years. The 1880 census finds Nathaniel and Cynthia living with their daughter and son-in-law in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Coldwater is a single-merchant town and ranks as the fourth rarest town in Michigan. Two varieties of Waterman tokens exist, and each is rated R.8, meaning that only five to 10 examples are believed to exist for each variety. The present Gem has light olive surfaces with traces of original red on the obverse and considerable brilliant red color on the reverse. We are unable to imagine the existence of a nicer example of either variety.
Purchased from H. Leonard (6/8/1940) for 50 cents.
