    Description

1863 A.N. Alward, Dowagiac, MI, F-250A-1a, R.7 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Located on the Michigan Central Railroad, Dowagiac is located 178 miles southwest of Detroit, 106 miles from Chicago, and 20 miles from Elkhart, Indiana. The population in 1863 was about 1,500 people. The Michigan Business Directory notes that Dowagiac was "regarded as one of the most prosperous and flourishing towns in the State. It is surrounded by a rich and productive farming country, and is evidently destined to become a place of considerable importance." Several Civil War token issuers in Dowagiac lost their business in an 1864 fire. Although obviously cleaned, this token has full details with reddish-brown surfaces.
Purchased from James Kelly (12/20/1941) for 40 cents. Said to be from the Virgil Brand Collection.
