Description1863 C. I. Holthofer, Detroit, MI, F-225AO-6a1, R.10, MS63 Red and Brown NGC. This Store Card struck with the incorrect middle initial for Holthofer (or Holthoeffer) is rare both as a die marriage and due to the error with the middle initial. In addition, it is struck in copper with a Plain Edge vs. the normally found Reeded Edge, and may be unique. Cliff Temple picked up this token in 1940 when he acquired the Michigan portion of the collection of H. E. Wilson, a West Virginia collector. In addition to its possible unique status, it is also a wonderful Select Mint State piece with about one-third original red on each side. The balance of the surfaces exhibit bluish-brown toning with minor spots that limit the grade.
Purchased from H.E. Wilson (9/24/1940) for 11 cents.
