    Description

1863 C.J. Holthofer, Detroit, MI, F-225AO-1a1, R.10, MS65 Red and Brown NGC. Caspar J. Holthofer (sic) was a dealer in dry goods when this Store Card token was issued. This token (with the initials correctly in the die as 'C. J.') was most likely struck after the 'C. I.' Holthofer Card (MI F-225AO-6aI) offered two lots later in this sale with the middle initial as 'I,' also in error. Once again we note a different spelling of the last name in the 1863 and 1864 Detroit city directories, "Holthoeffer, Caspar J." In checking further listings, Holthoeffer appears to be the correct spelling of the name. Thus two Stanton die making errors are noted on this Store Card, one for the middle initial and one for the spelling of the last name. The business was located at 120 St Antione in Detroit in 1863. Another unique copper Store Card with the Plain Edge. This Gem has reflective fields with deep orange color on both sides. Hints of blue toning appear on the reverse.
