Description1863 Congdon Brothers, Chelsea, MI, F-175A-1a, R.9, AU55 NGC. Located in Washtenaw County, and situated 54 miles west of Detroit, Chelsea enjoyed a station on the Michigan Central railroad. The village had a population of about 700 inhabitants in 1863.
Among Civil War store cards, Chelsea is a single-merchant town, the eighth rarest in Michigan. Two varieties are known from different reverse dies, and both are offered in this offering from the Temple collection.
This token is extremely rare, with only two to five known, according to the R.9 rarity rating. A lovely Choice AU specimen, this piece has medium olive surfaces with delicate bluish overtones.
