    Description

1863 Dr. L.C. Rose, Detroit, MI, F-225BL-3b, R.8, MS64 NGC. Dr. Levi C. Rose's office was located at "Fisher Block, up stairs" according to the 1864 Detroit city directory. According to the 1870 federal census, Levy (sic.) Rose was age 63, a physician, was born in Pennsylvania and was married to Celia, age 52 with two daughters, one who later married C. C. Randall (MI F-225BG). Rose's business must have been pretty good as he is listed with an estate worth $17,000, a relatively large amount in 1869-70. Dr. Rose likely could have easily afforded any or all of the rare off-metal examples of his Store Card had they been offered to him, including this one struck on a brass planchet. Minor carbon flecks are evident on each side, limiting the grade of this near-Gem. Both sides have light yellow brilliance with faint orange splashes. The reverse is slightly darker than the obverse, and both sides are prooflike.
