Description

1863 George E. Curtis, Detroit, MI, F-225T-4d, R.10, MS64 NGC. Here is still another fresh, extremely rare Store Card struck on a copper-nickel planchet. George E. Curtis operated a "Leather & Findings" business located at 215 Jefferson Avenue, not too far away from and in between two other merchants who issued Civil War Store Card tokens, Hans Christiansen (MI F-225O) at 259 Jefferson Ave. and Simon Cohen (MI F-225Q) and his clothing business at 155 Jefferson Ave. Perhaps a traveling salesman went to all three of these businesses in early 1863 showing his stock dies and getting orders for the Store Cards! It is safe to say that Curtis was not aware that Stanton was striking additional tokens on special, off-metal planchets such as this specimen struck on a copper-nickel planchet. This impressive near-Gem features the Prairie Flower reverse, exhibiting brilliant tan luster with minimal carbon flecks or other blemishes.
