Description

1863 Hilterscheid Bros., Detroit, MI, F-225AM-1a1, R.10, MS63 Brown NGC. This Store Card was issued for the Hilterscheid Brothers Meat Market located at the corner of Fort and Russell Streets, Detroit. There is no person with the last name spelled as Hilterscheid in the 1863-4 Detroit city directories; however there is a listing for Hilderscheit P & Bro (Peter and John) in the 1863 directory, with even another spelling of the last name under John's listing (Heilderscheit). The 1865 directory has the last name spelled Hildersoheid and in 1866 we are back to Hildererscheidt. By 1872 the spelling is listed as Hilderscheit! Regardless of the correct spelling, whatever it might be, this token is likely unique, struck with a Plain Edge on a copper planchet. Although NGC designates this piece as Brown, the obverse has nearly 40% red while the reverse is mostly brown with splashes of red. Highly lustrous and attractive.
Purchased from H.E. Wilson (9/24/1940) for 11 cents.

Thanks to Heritage I realized a handsome profit for my coin submissions and intend to send most of the remainder of my collection to Heritage Auction Galleries for future auctions.
