    1863 MI-595A-1a Maple Rapids Token, AU55
    Second Rarest Michigan Town
    Isaac Hewitt, Dry Goods

1863 Isaac Hewitt, Maple Rapids, MI, F-595A-1a, R.8, AU55 NGC. Located on the Maple River in Clinton County, the community was 110 miles west of Detroit, established at the site of a trading post that established about 1826. Isaac Hewitt was born in Clinton county in January 20, 1839, the son of William and Hannah (Hyatt) Hewitt. His father was an early resident of Maple Rapids whom some credit as the founder of the community. The younger Hewitt married Helen Lansing in April 1859. When his father died in 1863, Hewitt filled his position as justice of the peace and held the office of township treasurer. After establishing a flour mill, he began his mercantile business in 1860 and also operated a saw mill and lumber business from 1864 to 1874. Hewitt died on April 29, 1921 and is interred at Sowle Cemetery in Saint Johns, Michigan.
Considerable luster remains on this lovely mahogany-brown token, with slightly darker patina on the reverse high points. Attributed to Childs of Chicago, the distinctive triangular border dentils may be a key to tokens from this manufacturer.
