Description

1863 J. B. Shagnon, Detroit, MI, F-225BR-2a, R.7, MS65 Red NGC. This Store Card issuer eluded this cataloger's research for years, despite trying a number of possible spellings of this last name. William Luitje, a collector, researcher, and member of the Civil War Token Society (CWTS) finally solved this mystery in July 2009. He had noted a listing for a J. B. Chagnon, grocer, 63 Larned in the 1863 Michigan Gazetteer. Sure enough Chagnon, a grocer is listed in the 1862-65 city directories, and in the 1863 directory we learn that his first name is John. Thus this token was issued by John B. Chagnon (not Shagnon), the misspelling another probable error on John Stanton's part. This particular specimen might cause a stir amongst bidders as there are very few Civil War Store Cards that are graded NGC MS65 Red! Both sides are reflective with full bright orange luster. An exceptional Gem, and easily the finest known from a population of less than 20 pieces. Bid accordingly.
