    Description

1863 L.S. Freeman, Detroit, MI, F-225AC-2a1, R.9, MS65 Red and Brown NGC. This variety of the L. S. Freeman Store Card was unknown to the Fuld's and is not listed in their book US Civil War Store Cards. It is struck on a copper planchet and is from the same die marriage as MI F-225AC-2a which mated the Freemen Store Card die with the 1042 reverse. However, this specimen comes with a Plain Edge; examples of MI F-225AC-2a come with a Reeded Edge. A specimen of MI F-225AC-2a1 was reported in the Bowen Collection at one time. This may or may not be the Bowen Specimen (and probably is not given the date of this acquisition), thus we conclude that there are at least two known examples of this variety. Moderately prooflike surfaces exhibit nearly full red with only slight mellowing on each side. Even the distinctive edge retains its red color.
Purchased from James Kelly (7/8/1943) for 75 cents.
