Description1863 Mather & Shefferly, Detroit, MI, F-225AX-2b1, R.10 - Scratches - NGC Details. VF. The Mather and Shefferly Crockery Store was located at 138 & 140 Woodward Avenue, Detroit. The 1863 Detroit city directory has a listing that matches perfectly, "Mather & Shefferly (F P Mather and J. B Shefferly), crockery and glass ware 138 & 140 Woodward av." Francis P. Mather and John B. Shefferly issued this Store Card.
Unlisted in the Fuld reference and also in the pending revision, this token requires careful examination and discussion among specialists. Attributed as a Plain Edge token, the edge has obvious file marks around most of its circumference. There are also heavy scratches over most of the obverse. It is unknown if the edge marks happened at the time of manufacture, or if they represent a later attempt to simulate a Plain Edge.
Purchased from Paul Koppenhaver (6/29/1976) for $16.50.
