    Description

1863 M.H. Clark, Clarkston, MI, F-180A-1i, R.9, MS65 NGC. Located 35 miles northwest of Detroit, Clarkston was situated in Oakland County on the Detroit and Milwaukee railroad. The population in 1863 was about 400 people. Milton H. Clark dealt in hardware, groceries, boots, and shoes. He was born in New York about 1820, and was married to Hannah, who was born in New York about 1824. Their children, both born in Michigan, were Charlemagne (b. 1850) and Edwin (b. 1857).
The obverse die for the Clark tokens shows distinct recutting of M.H. CL. The zinc tokens, designated by the "i" suffix, are more specifically zinc-plated copper or brass tokens, nearly always found with reverse die number 1042. This lovely Gem has brilliant gray surfaces with full luster and faint copper highlights.
