    Smith Brothers

1863 Smith Brothers, Addison, MI, F-3A-1b, R.8 MS65 NGC. The Smith Brothers are identified in the 1863 Michigan State Gazetteer and Business Directory as George A. and Legrand J. Smith. George Anson Smith was born at Bethel, Connecticut, on March 8, 1825, and died at Somerset Township, Hillsdale, Michigan, on January 29, 1893. He was the son of Azariel Smith and Mary Ann Andrews who relocated from Connecticut to Michigan in 1839. The younger Smith was married to Catherine Simonds (1823-1864) on July 3, 1851, and they were the parents of six children. After the death of his first wife, Smith remarried Catherine Fitz (b. 1835), and they were the parents of Frank and Catherine. The 1860 Census lists Smith as a merchant, while 1870 and 1880 Census records list him as a farmer.
George Smith's brother, Legrand John Smith, was born at Bethel, Connecticut on January 8, 1837, and died at Somerset, Hillsdale, Michigan, on June 18, 1898. He was married to Emma Maria Torrence, and they were the parents of four children. Both of the Smith brothers served in the Michigan Legislature, and they were active in local affairs.
