    Description

1863 The Tea Store, Detroit, MI, F-225CE-2i, R.9, MS65 NGC. The Tea Store was located at 146 Woodward, another popular street for Detroit Store Card issuers. This cataloger cannot find the Tea Store" (as a business) listed in any Detroit city directories. It took some work to locate the following in the 1864 Detroit city directory. There is a listing that matches, "LINN A R & W F, (Alexander R. and William F.), tea and coffee dealers, 146 Woodward ave." There is also a listing for "Baker F G & Co., tea and coffee dealer at 146 Woodward in the 1862 directory and in the 1863 Michigan Gazetteer. Frank G. Baker and William H Reed were the proprietors. Frank Baker is still listed at 146 Woodward in the 1863 directory, but William Reed has "moved on." It appears the Linn's may have acquired this business from Baker and / or Reed. Noting that information for the directories and Gazetteers was likely gathered in the year before they were published the Linn's get the nod for having issued this Store Card in 1863. None of the Linn's, Baker or Reed were ever aware of this special Store Card having been struck in zinc (tin) using The Tea Store dies. There are only two to four examples known of this rarity, and this Gem is likely the finest, with reflective fields and lustrous light gray surfaces.
