    Description

1863 V.P. Collier, Battle Creek, MI, F-60A-1a, R.9, MS64 Red and Brown NGC. In 1863, Battle Creek was described as an important and flourishing city of Calhoun County, about 120 miles west of Detroit. The city "enjoys an extensive reputation as a market, for grain, wool, fruit, and other products," according to the Michigan State Gazetteer and Business Directory.
Victory Phelps Collier was a hardware merchant. He was the son of Stephen Collier and Abigail E. Phelps, born at Victor, Ontario County, New York, on April 25, 1819, and died at Battle Creek, on June 28, 1898. In addition to his business activity, he was a prominent citizen and politician, serving as a state senator in the late 1860s, as state treasurer from 1871 to 1874, and as president of the First National Bank of Battle Creek. Extensive biographical information about Collier is available online.
This token is the rarer of just two varieties of Collier tokens, and the other variety is rated R.7. A Choice Mint State example, it exhibits about 50% original orange luster with medium brown toning, mostly at the centers.
Purchased from J. Barnet (8/15/1939) for 50 cents.
