Description

1863 W.E. Tunis, Detroit, MI, F-225CF-2i, R.9, MS65 NGC. William E. Tunis issued this Store Card stating that he was a General News Dealer in Detroit, Clifton, C.W. (Canada West) and Milwaukee. This is a popular Store Card due to the three locations noted, including what might be called the only "Canadian Store Card." This raises the question; did the regular issue Tunis Store Cards circulate in Milwaukee or Clifton, Canada as well as in Detroit? This particular specimen certainly did not as it is a collector strike, having been specially struck on a zinc plated copper planchet. This specimen was lot 814 in Milferd H. Bolender's Wednesday, March 24, 1943 151st Auction Sale where it was cataloged, "Michigan. The celebrated Tunis Card, Detroit & Milwaukee, news dealer, 1863 nickel. Indian head. Unc. V. rare." Both sides of this Gem have brilliant light gray surfaces with reflective, lustrous fields.
    Ex: M.H. Bolender (3/24/1943), lot 814.
