    Description

1863 W.J. Adderley, Detroit, MI, F-225A-6i, R.9, MS64 NGC. William J. Adderly was one of over two dozen grocers to issue Civil War Store Card tokens in Detroit, Michigan. His last name can be found spelled two different ways on the Store Cards he issued, Adderley and Adderly. Adderly is believed to be the correct spelling of the last name. The Temple Collection has specimens with both of the spellings of the last name. His grocery business was located at 157 Gratiot St. The dies for this token were made by John Stanton of Cincinnati, Ohio. This extremely rare Store Card is struck on a zinc plated copper planchet, with only two to four specimens known. Stanton struck many of the Detroit Cards in limited quantities specifically for collectors using copper, brass, zinc plated copper, and copper-nickel planchets. This prooflike near-Gem has exceptional eye appeal with bold design motifs and traces of iridescent toning. Both sides exhibit minimal carbon flecks and other blemishes that limit the grade.
    Purchased from J. Canfield (2/13/1971) for $15.00.
