Description

1863 Yankee Smith's Saloon, Detroit, MI, F-225BV-3i, R.9, MS64 NGC. The Yankee Smith's Saloon Card is another that has proved fairly elusive in this cataloger's research, including spending time at the Burton Historical Society, Detroit Public Library on two occasions. This Store Card was likely issued by an Edward Smith, listed in the 1863 Detroit city directory as operating an "eating house" at 1 Michigan Avenue, the same address that appears on the Yankee Smith token. This listing only appears in the 1863 directory, not the years before and after this date. An Edward Smith operated a Saloon at a different address as noted in the 1861 directory. Yankee Smith probably never set eyes on this specimen which was struck in zinc (plated copper) for collectors, with no intent to be used in his Saloon. Traces of the underlying copper are evident on this near-Gem, with lustrous light gray surfaces and excellent eye appeal.
    Purchased from J. Canfield (2/13/1971) for $20.00.
