Description

    1864 MI-225W-5d Detroit Token, MS65
    David Dickson, Grocer
    Unique Copper-Nickel Token

1864 D. Dickson, Detroit, MI, F-225W-5d, R.10, MS65 NGC. David Dickson operated a grocery and provision business at the corner of First and Larned, just a block away from the Detroit City Flour Mills. Dickson was born in Ireland about 1824 and soon relocated to Detroit. The 1850 Census for Detroit records David Dickson, a 26 year-old grocer. He appears again in the 1860 census as a grocer in Detroit. The name of David Dickson appears as a grocer at First and Larned in the 1862-63 Detroit City Directory.
Only two copper-nickel varieties are known for this merchant, and each is unique. This lovely Gem has light tan surfaces with a sharp strike and prooflike fields. Trivial splashes of darker toning appear between feathers on the reverse.
    Purchased from C. Verhoeven (3/14/1946) for $2.50.

Thanks to Heritage I realized a handsome profit for my coin submissions and intend to send most of the remainder of my collection to Heritage Auction Galleries for future auctions.
