    Description

1864 Detroit City Flour Mills, Detroit, MI, F-225V-6a, R.10, MS63 Brown NGC. Cliff Temple noted, "H. E. Wilson was an old collector in West Virginia and was selling his collection due to old age and failing eye sight. Otto Kersteiner purchased the Ohio portion of the collection and advised me that the Michigan portion of the collection was available, which I purchased." Opportunities like this do not come up every day, and Temple took advantage of this to add to his extensive collection.
This particular Store Card issuer has proved difficult to research over the years. In the 1863 Detroit directory there is a listing for Detroit City Mills at the southeast corner of Larned and Second. This cataloger believes this is the correct address for the Detroit City Flour Mills. To find the probably owner of this business and issuer of this Store Card years ago this cataloger reviewed every name in the city directory and didn't stop until he noted, "Jones, John R., propr Detroit city mills." Thus it appears the issuer was John R. Jones. This 11 cent purchase is listed as R.10 in the Fuld reference and the pending revision, and it may be the only specimen known. A splendid Select Mint State piece, the Brown description hardly does justice, as about a quarter of the original red remains on the obverse, and nearly as much on the reverse.
Purchased from H.E. Wilson (9/24/1940) for 11 cents.
