    Description

    1864 MI-225V-6d Detroit Token, MS65 NGC
    Detroit City Flour Mills
    Unique Copper-Nickel Variant

1864 Detroit City Flour Mills, Detroit, MI, F-225V-6d, R.10, MS65 NGC. Under the heading of Flour Mills in the 1863 Michigan State Gazetteer and Business Directory is found the "City Mills," managed by John R. Jones, at the corner of Second and Larned. That business was listed earlier, in the 1856 edition, and later, in the 1873 edition. An earlier manager or owner of the business was Robert Gillespie. Today, the northwest corner of the Joe Louis Arena occupies that location.
Several varieties of the City Mills token exist, and most are rare, with a single variety listed as R.4. All the others range from R.7 to R.10. Most of those different varieties are copper, with just two copper-nickel varieties, each unique. The obverse is nicely centered with a single small spot at 2:30. The reverse is slightly off-center with a border outside the dentils from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock. Both sides have lovely light tan with splashes of iridescence. The fields are reflective and overall, this Gem exhibits exceptional eye appeal.
    Purchased from C. Verhoeven (3/14/1946) for $2.50.
