    Description

1864 F. Prouty, Detroit, MI, F-225BF-3d, R.9, MS64 NGC. Fayette Prouty operated a grocery & provision store located at 73 Grand River Street West. Prouty had a son William, who it appears may have been a clerk in the grocery store; in 1872 the business was called F. Prouty & Son. Thus Prouty was in business for a relatively long period of time compared to some Store Card issuers. This specimen of the Prouty store card is struck on a copper-nickel planchet, and like many of the other copper-nickel strikes is dated 1864. This specimen has been off the market for over 65 years. A splendid near-Gem, this piece has lustrous tan surfaces with minor spots, mostly on the reverse.
    Purchased from C. Verhoeven (3/14/1946) for $2.50.
