Description

1864 Farmers Clothing Store, Detroit, MI, F-225AA-3a, R.9, MS64 Red and Brown NGC. This 1864 Store Card struck with the 1047 reverse die is still another rarity from the Temple Collection. Curiously, there is no listing for a Farmers Clothing Store in either the 1863 or 1864 Detroit city directories with the business name on the Store Card, the Farmers Clothing Store at 251 & 253 Gratiot. Fortunately, the 1864 directory has an advertisement on page 79 for the "Farmers' Clothing Emporium." At the bottom of the advertisement it notes, "Farmers Clothing Stores, number 251 and 253 Gratiot Street" (Gratoit was once again spelled incorrectly when Stanton's company made the die). Thus we can link this Farmers Clothing Store die to the John Schroeder& Co Clothing Store Card (MI F-225BO). There is a muling of these two Store Card dies (MI F-225BO-4a) that appears to have circulated extensively. For more information on the Farmers and Schroeder Store Cards and other mulings see The Civil War Token Journal, Vol. 39, Number 3, Fall 2005, pages 3-9, "Muled Merchant Die Pairings for the Detroit Civil War Store Cards" by W. David Perkins. This specimen was acquired from well known dealer James Kelly in 1943. A specimen was reported in the Bowen Collection, thus at least two examples may be known. Delicate brown toning appears on the deep orange surfaces of this Choice Mint State specimen.
Purchased from James Kelly (5/7/1943) for 35 cents.
