1864 Feuchtwanger Three Cent Token, MS64
    Rare Fuld-NY630X-1j, HT-267

1864 Feuchtwanger Three Cent, Eagle, MS64 PCGS. Low-179A, Fuld-NY630X-1j, HT-267. German silver, 25 mm, reeded edge. Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger unsuccessfully lobbied for the U.S. Mint to adopt his German silver alloy for Federal coinage. He was the first to propose a three-cent denomination, eventually struck by the Mint in 1851. His tokens were chiefly struck during the Hard Times era, though backdated Feuchtwanger cent tokens were likely struck during the Civil War, as was the present rare variety. The eagle-and-snake motif, also seen on his cent tokens, originated on Mexican silver coinage. A sharply struck and unmarked almond-gold near-Gem. Listed on page 415 of the 2017 Guide Book. (Est. $7,000-$10,000).
