    1864 MI-45A-4d Civil War Token, MS65
    Palmer's Woolen Factory, Atlas, Michigan

1864 F.J. & J. Palmer's Woolen Factory, Atlas, MI, F-45A-4d, R.9, MS65 NGC. The Michigan State Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1863 identifies Frank J. Palmer, who operated a flour and saw mill, and John A. Palmer, a woolen manufacturer. Frank was born in New York on October 14, 1833, and died on November 8, 1893. An individual named John Palmer (1822-1888) is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Gaines, Genesee County, Michigan.
This Gem copper-nickel token has reflective surfaces with brilliant light tan patina, exhibiting delightful iridescent overtones. Faint clash marks are evident in the obverse field over WOOLEN.
Cliff Temple purchased a number of copper-nickel tokens from C. Verhoeven, and writes that he "was a collector in Monroe, Mich. He sent me a group of Copper-nickel cards un-asked and without notice, offering them at $2.50 each. I bought them, of course."
Charles Francis Verhoeven (1908-2001) was a banker with the First National Bank of Monroe, and a "founding member" of the Monroe Coin Club, according to his obituary.
    Purchased from C. Verhoeven (3/14/1946) for $2.50.
