    Description

1864 Lapham & Thayer, Detroit, MI, F-225AS-3a, R.9, MS64 Red and Brown NGC. Hiram S. Lapham and Peter S. Thayer sold new and second hand furniture based on the description on their Store Card. The 1863 Detroit city directory called the business an "auction and commission store." From this it appears they sold new and used furniture, retail, held auctions and possibly sold on consignment. Here is another copper rarity struck for a collector and stuck with the 1047 reverse die. Only two examples may be known, this and another specimen that was reported in the Bowen Collection. Designated Red and Brown, this extremely rare token has substantially more red than brown. The obverse has nearly full color and the reverse has trivial bluish-brown toning.
Purchased from James Kelly (5/7/1943) for 35 cents.
