Description

1864 W.E. Tunis, Detroit, MI, F-225CF-3d, R.9, MS65 NGC. Clifton Temple published an article from the Detroit Free Press May 21, 1863 in the Winter 1971 issue of the Journal of the Civil War Token Society, page 27, "Messrs. W. E. Tunis & Co., news dealers, have recently perfected some improvements in their extensive establishment, which are deserving of notice. The rear of their store on Jefferson Avenue has been cut through tin the shape of a letter L, giving also a fine front on Griswold Street. This affords ample room for their business, and gives them beside, one of the finest and most convenient stores in the city. In addition to the large stock of papers, periodicals , and magazines, they have also a complete assortment of the newest and most popular books of the day, in addition to a book store. It is designed to make this note only a first-class news depot, but also a first-class book store. Entrance either on Jefferson Avenue or Griswold Street." Tom Casper, Numismatist had a friend that found a photo of the Tunis news stand in Milwaukee. This cataloger has a copy of that photo which he got from the Milwaukee Historical Society. The photo has "Tunis / News Depot / Bookstore" on the awning in front of the store. The specimen offered here is the extremely rare 1864 copper-nickel striking of the Tunis Store Card. This Gem has brilliant tan surfaces with pale orange overtones and minor spots. The fields are reflective, imparting exceptional eye appeal.
