    Description

1864 Wilkins & Martins, Detroit, MI, F-225CN-2d, R.9, MS65 NGC. Wilkins L & Co. is listed in the 1864 Detroit city directory with Lemuel Wilkins and Thomas M. Baxter, ink manuf'rs at 11 & 13 Woodbridge East as proprietors. The token reads "Wilkins & Martins Celebrated Ink Blacking Depot, Detroit." There is an advertisement for L. Wilkins & Co. in the 1863 directory, "Manufacturers of all kinds of Writing Fluid, black, blue, carmine, copying, indelible, Draughtsmen's and Shoemakers' Inks, Also, marking and stencil inks in different colors." This cataloger believes Martins is a die error and should read "Martin's," meaning more than one. The Wilkins & Martins Store Card die is found muled with a Card that circulated fairly heavily, the Martin Bro's Cheap Boot and Shoe store Card (MI F-225CN-2a). The "Shoemaker's Inks" in the advertisement for L. Wilkins & Co. is one of the clues that this cataloger has found that ties the two muled die Store Cards together. If this logic is true, then the "Martins" refers to the three Martin Brothers, John, James and Edward. This specimen is the extremely rare copper nickel die variety, with the 1864 date and was struck using the 1047 reverse die. Mildly reflective surfaces exhibit delicate iridescent toning over tan luster.
