    Description

1864 W.J. Adderley, Detroit, MI, F-225A-7d, R.9, MS64 NGC. This specimen of the Adderley Store Card is struck in copper-nickel, with only one or two examples of this die marriage believed to exist. Cliff Temple purchased a large quantity of the copper-nickel collector strikes from C. Verhoeven in 1946, a most fortuitous purchase albeit at a relatively high price for the time! Per Temple's notes, "C. Verhoeven was a collector in Monroe, Michigan. He sent me a group of Copper-nickel cards (Un-asked and without notice) offering them at $2.50 each. I bought them, of course." Offerings of Michigan Store Cards struck on copper-nickel planchets are few and far between, with typically only one or two specimens known for each merchant. A large quantity of copper-nickel specimens is being offered in this sale of the Temple Collection but most of these have been off the market for over 65 years! Very few specimens have been offered since Temple acquired these in the 1940s. Hints of reflectivity appear on both sides of this golden-tan near-Gem with minor carbon-flecks on each side that limit the grade.
    Purchased from C. Verhoeven (3/14/1946) for $2.50.
From The Clifton A. Temple Collection.

With the superb catalog, a masterwork prepared by Mark Borckhardt, the sale was destined to meet all of my expectations; that it did, and then some. Be assured that I would highly recommend Heritage Auctions to any of my associates contemplating the sale
