Description

Die Deterioration Study of the Washington-Crossed Flags/Exchange Patriotic Token. This has to be among the most fascinating lots in this Heritage auction offering of medals and tokens. The present lot is a Study of Die Deterioration in the U.S. Civil War Token (1863-5), all housed in a Capital plastic holder with that title. The lot consists of 35 pieces of the Washington-Crossed Flags/Exchange Civil War patriotic token, Fuld-117/420a/b, R.1, mostly in copper but with a few brass pieces, showing the progressive signs of deterioration in the obverse die. This die went from showing no obvious damage (prime state) to showing a light die break joining two points of star 4 and 5, to a rim cud, to a progressively larger rim cud, to finally end up at massive die damage on the verge of complete shattering--in 34 stages! (Stage 15 is shown with both brass and copper examples.) Most of the pieces are in the Fine to Very Fine grade range, although some of the pieces would grade XF to AU and a couple are in the lower grade range. A fascinating study of progressive die damage that must have required the consignor to examine countless Civil War patriotics in order to complete.
